Peugeot announces a new 48V HYBRID powertrain for the 3008 and 5008! The new powertrain complements the existing Peugeot electrified range, coupling a 136hp PureTech petrol engine with a 6-speed dual-clutch electrified gearbox that features an integrated electric motor which helps reduce fuel consumption by 15%.

Powertrain Performance

This new powertrain takes the place of the PureTech 130 EAT8 and will soon be available on other models in the Peugeot range. Including the 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW, and new 408. Peugeot 3008 and 5008 models will be the first to benefit from the new powertrain. The first customer deliveries are set to take place in Summer 2023.

During everyday driving the combustion and electric motors can run concurrently or separately to maximise efficiency. When the battery charge allows it, the Hybrid system makes it possible to start, manoeuvre and drive at low speed in heavy traffic in 100% electric mode. In urban driving, the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 Hybrid can be driven in 100% zero-emission electric mode. This results in a drop in fuel consumption of 15%.

When driving at higher speeds the combustion engine will stop when the driver releases the accelerator pedal at a steady speed When the engine is under high load, such as during overtaking, the electric motor provides additional torque with a one-off boost. This compensates for the turbo’s response time and will avoid downshifts providing more driving comfort and dynamism. When the driver presses the accelerator fully, the electric engine provides an additional 9 kW (approx. 12 hp) of power.

The Main Components of the 48V Powertrain

Most aspects of the hybrid system are located under the bonnet. The 48V battery, however, is installed under the front left seat of the 3008 and 5008.

The Peugeot 48V Hybrid engine includes a new electrified 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (e-DCS6 Dual Clutch System) without torque break. The gearbox also houses the electric motor, the inverter and the ECU, which optimises the size and weight of the vehicle and improves driving performance.

The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor develops a peak power of 21kW (28hp) and a torque of 55Nm. This allows for 100% electrical driving for low torque requirements and assists the combustion engine reducing consumption. During deceleration, the engine acts as a generator recharging the Hybrid system’s 48V battery providing the main start for the combustion engine with the assistance of the belt-starter. The 48V-powered starter ensures that the combustion engine is restarted via the accessory belt allowing fast, seamless starts.

The 48V Lithium-Ion battery is installed under the front left seat to ensure the full boot volume is maintained. It has a gross capacity of 898Wh and an available capacity of 432Wh. It is designed to maintain the same level of performance throughout the life of the vehicle. This is why the vehicle comes with an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty.

The new HYBRID powertrain fulfils Peugeot’s commitment to have a fully electrified range in 2023. By 2025, Peugeot will have a 100% electric version available across the entire range. By 2030 peugeot will only sell electric vehicles in the UK.
